“He very kindly brings me a plastic bag, brimming with his copies of Banipal, the Arab literary magazine. I discover inside one of them some beautiful pages of a novel by an Iraqi writer, Lutfiya al-Dulaimi:

All places were alike under the rain and wind and fear and they moved without a goal
or compass. . . . Some were willing to surrender half their years, just to get away from
death, what would they do with the other half?
